Healthy Aging
By Dr. Brett Phillips

We should all adhere to the principles of prevention, education and individualized healthcare. At the core of any good healthy aging program is diet and daily activity.

The recommended level of daily activity would vary for each individual, but the general recommendation would include 30 minutes of core strengthening and /or weight bearing activity followed by 30 minutes of high intensity aerobic activity. The weight bearing activities stimulate the body to increase muscle mass and prevent osteoporosis, both of which are common concerns in people over the age of 50. The aerobic activity will promote a healthy cardiovascular system through lowering bad cholesterol, regulating blood pressure and balancing blood sugar levels.

Some of the key elements in a healthy diet are limiting red meats, refined carbohydrates and saturated ‘bad’ fats. A healthy diet would include lean sources of protein, lots of fruits and vegetables and an increase in polyunsaturated ‘good’ fats (omega 3, 6 and 9). This type of diet creates an environment in the body that is anti inflammatory, high in antioxidants and promotes optimal immune function.

Specific supplements like omega 3 fatty acids, nutrient protein shakes and calcium-magnesium can often be taken each day to ensure healthy aging. These supplements help by promoting proper cellular biochemistry, muscle and nerve function.

It is important to be aware that as the body ages, its ability to utilize some nutrients may become hindered. This may be do to a long history of poor nutrition, antibiotic use, food allergies, an existing gastrointestinal condition, chronic stress etc. If this is the case, it is a good idea to find out if Intravenous Nutrient Therapy is an option for you. Intravenous Nutrient Therapy assists the body, bypassing the absorption mechanism and delivering nutrients in optimal proportions directly to the tissues. Some of the health concerns that can be helped include chronic fatigue, poor memory, weak immune system, acute infections, chronic depression, trauma and pre and post surgical healing.

High stress levels are another aspect that must be assessed and addressed. To mitigate stress levels, regular acupuncture and daily belly breathing work wonderfully. Acupuncture applied to specific areas of the body can release stored energy and stimulate the release of ‘feel good hormones’ called endorphins. The belly breathing helps by turning off the sympathetic ‘fight or flight’ nervous system and activates the parasympathetic nervous system which stimulates relaxation, boosts your immune system and aids in proper digestion.

In any case, a comprehensive assessment and treatment plan by a licensed naturopathic physician can help with your healthy aging goals.
